On March 12th, the Maryland Highway Administration began construction on 17 southbound exit ramps on I-81.  Improving the state of Maryland’s roads is a constant effort that requires time, money, and craftsmanship.  It also means staggering work days in order to make sure motorists do not run into overly heavy traffic during rush hour.  This delicate balance of construction and travel is what creates such interesting conditions for the SHA, which works to improve roads all over Maryland.  To learn more about this construction, read on.

How Will They be Paved?

State highways, especially exit ramps, require a different form of paving than normal residential roads.  These ramps must be stripped of their first layer of asphalt, then repaved.  It is then that new markings will be added.  During this process, motorists may experience temporary lanes and grooved pavement until the project is complete.  The MDOT suggests caution for motorists who are using I-81 for travel.  This pavement project is the final phase in a project that adds an auxiliary lane between the Pennsylvania line and Halfway Boulevard.  This project totaled around $6.3 million.

When Will it Take Place?

If all goes well and the weather allows for it, the project should be completed by mid-spring, so motorists don’t have to worry about construction for very long.  These 17 ramps will be replaced with detours during hours of operations, and will be closed during that time.  Starting at 8pm on Sundays, construction will take place between the hours of 8pm and 5am, Sunday through Thursday.  Once all of these ramps are completed, the final paving project will begin; that project involves the repaving of I-81, finishing the work entirely.  If you are affected at all by these hours and by this construction, plan your detours now.  You can save travel time by knowing the path you need to take in order to reach your destination.
