Trip hazards are not uncommon on sidewalks or patios where concrete may have broken, chipped, or shifted from frosts, tree roots or just natural formation. There are basically two kinds of concrete: concrete that cracks and concrete that is going to crack. Federal law requires the removal of all trip hazards from all pedestrian walkways. Because the ADA demands compliance, trip hazards present a legal liability. By eliminating trip hazards, property owners reduce their legal liability.
Concrete Grinding as a Solution
Concrete grinding is a modern technique to eliminate trip and fall hazards. The process uses a scarifier concrete grinder and dry surface grinder to sand down the raised side of two joining sections of concrete. Within a matter of minutes, the raised side can be ground down permanently eliminating the potential trip and fall hazard. For those unfamiliar with scarifiers, they are also called surface planers or milling machines, and they remove concrete faster and more aggressively than grinders. That’s because they use the pummeling action of multi-tipped cutting wheels, or flails, that rotate at high speeds to chip away at the concrete surface. Another method for concrete repair that homeowners and businesses owners are trying is to raise concrete sidewalk slabs with bars as a method of concrete repair. Aside from being dangerous or risky, this never works for any protracted length of time due to not being able to obtain proper support under their concrete slab.
Saving You Money!
Aside from all the liabilities avoided by correcting potential trip hazards, concrete grinding can save you money by not having to replace the concrete altogether. By addressing the issue caused by tree roots or other factors, the damaged sidewalk can effectively be repaired instead of replaced, which can save homeowners and businesses hundreds of dollars if not thousands.
