Pavement is everywhere, and we often overlook the problems that exist because we’re so used to them. For those outside the industry, asphalt cracks are probably not even a blip on their radar. They may even seem normal; but, in reality, pavement defects can cause serious issues. Some can be unsafe, and may even violate regulations. But different defects require different repair options, so it’s important you’re able to describe the defect to a professional. Read on to see the most common pavement defects.
- Alligator Cracks
If your pavement is cracked in the design of alligator skin, that means there is a structural failure. This can be due to poor drainage, heavy traffic, or any other kind of excessive stress placed on the pavement.
- Potholes
These are what happen if alligator cracks aren’t fixed. Potholes can vary in size depending on a number of factors like traffic and structural integrity, but they’re all caused because moisture has led to the collapse of the pavement.
- Linear Cracks
This is a specific kind of defect that shows a crack running parallel to the sidewalk. It stretches in a long line, with infrequent breaks. It almost always occurs in the middle of the street because the joint where two pavement slabs come together is usually the weakest part of the pavement.
- Depressions
Easy to spot after a rain storm, depressions are parts of the pavement that exist at a lower elevation. They are sometimes referred to as bird baths. Severe depressions may call for an entire replacement of the pavement.
- Shoving
If you’ve ever driven over a particularly bumpy patch of pavement, this is called shoving. It’s when distress causes pavement to become deformed in the form of a washboard-like texture. Most of the time, it’s due to a poorly mixed pavement base.
