Common Concrete Issues

Repair concrete cracks

When concrete is discolored or begins to crack, it needs repair.

Concrete is generally a fairly easy material to manage and care for. However, it’s important to know that you can experience big problems and major concrete repairs if your concrete was not properly laid. These common problems include discoloration, shrinkage, and scaling. Here’s a list of common concrete issues.

Discoloration Is A Common Problem

Concrete discoloration can occur under these circumstances: water being added at the jobsite, poor workmanship, a different cement material, and possibly even if calcium chloride was added to the mix. All concrete ingredients used must meet with the standards set by the American Society For Testing And Materials (ASTM).

Scaling Issues

This is another common problem which requires concrete repairs. Scaling occurs when the surface of concrete breaks off up to two inches and continues to peel away. This usually occurs due to inadequate concrete strength or a less than optimal curing procedure. Concrete scaling also often occurs when water seeps into porous, non air entrained concrete exposed to the freeze-thaw cycle during the winter.

Crazed Concrete

One of the most usual concrete problems is crazing. Crazed concrete occurs when the surface shows several interconnected fine cracks. All though the strength and integrity is not negatively affected by crazing, cracks will appear whenever the slab is damp. Crazing occurs when the cement paste comes up to the surface and it shrinks.

Cracking Can Happen To Concrete

Concrete can crack easily. While the shrinking and cracking of concrete can not always be completely prevented, it can be managed. This is one of the most common causes of concrete repair. Cracking can be the result of thermal contraction, drying shrinkage, subgrade settlement, and even applied loads. If cracks are small enough and do not leak water, they are acceptable.

Watch Out For Concrete Curling

Concrete curling happens when there is more shrinkage at the bottom of the concrete after it has hardened. This happens because of differences in moisture and/or temperature between the top and bottom of the concrete surface.
