How to Repair Concrete Cracks

Repair concrete cracksWhether they are big or small, the need for concrete cracks will not magically disappear.

Different concrete cracks will require different methods of repairing, but it is inevitable that your surface will face some type of issues at some point. Instead of avoiding the problem until it gets bigger, let’s review crack types and how to efficiently repair them.

Wide Concrete Cracks

Wide concrete cracks require a large amount of work to repair. You will need to invest in a sledgehammer and a chisel if you don’t already own them, and you will need to make the base of the crack wider so that the internal crack is wider than the surface. Remove leftover debris after you made the base wider, and mix together vinyl patching compound as the manufacturer directs. Apply pressure to prevent air pockets from forming and trowel over your work.

Small & Narrow Concrete Cracks

Narrow concrete cracks are generally easier to repair, and you can use Masonry Crack Filler to repair narrow and smaller cracks in concrete. You can purchase the filler in a cartridge that is designed for a caulking gun, or you can use spreadable putty in place of the cartridge. Make sure that the area you plan on filling is free of debris, and then you can fill the crack and smooth it with a trowel.

Repairing Concrete Slabs

This is generally the most difficult type of concrete crack to repair, and it’s not going to be as simple as just using filler to repair the crack. You will have to use a sledgehammer to break down the damaged slab, and you will need to use the small pieces of rubble to create a bed for the replacement. That’s just the beginning, as you will still need to mix concrete and fill the area that needs repaired with concrete. Instead of attempting projects of this magnitude on their own, most people look towards a reliable company to help them get the job done right.
