Permeable Paving: Sustainable, Environmentally Friendly Pavement

Friday, October 19th, 2012

Throughout the United States, municipalities are passing ordinances to dictate the use of permeable pavement in new construction projects. This is because permeable paving is incredibly beneficial, especially in terms of sustainability.

Benefits of Permeable Pavement

  • Storm Water Runoff: Permeable paving eliminates pollutants and contaminants from water drain off. Unlike other pavements, permeable systems filter rainwater back into the soil, instead of carrying pollutants through storm drains to a nearby stream or river.
  • Erosion: Permeable paving also lessens stream erosion by filtering water into the soil instead of nearby streams and rivers. This lessens water to overflow stream banks.
  • Reduce Irrigation Demands: Because it filters water into the soil, permeable pavement lessens manmade irrigation demands.
  • Falling Water Tables: With so many impermeable surfaces, permeable pavement helps recharge falling water tables and relieve flooding in flood prone areas.
  • Heat Island Effect: By allowing water to filtrate into the ground, the surface and surrounding area temperatures will be cooler than a hard impervious surface.
  • Repairs: Permeable pavement is less costly to repair.
  • Aesthetics: Grey concrete can be boring. Permeable paving, meanwhile, comes in a wide variety of styles. From stone or concrete pavers to pervious concrete and more.

Concrete Tips for Harsh Winter Weather :: Baltimore Pavement Contractor

Friday, October 5th, 2012

The cold Maryland weather can really affect newly poured concrete. But this doesn’t mean that concrete cannot be placed, finished, and cured during the winter. It just means that you need to take extra special care when doing so.

Cold weather causes fresh and newly-hardened concrete to lose moisture and heat incredibly fast, which could negatively affect the concrete’s strength and life expectancy. To counteract this, your pavement contractor must observe proper design of mixes, proper mixing and transporting, proper placing, and proper finishing practices. If just one of these steps is neglected, the integrity iof the concrete could be in jeopardy. Because of this, it is important to rely on a concrete contractor you can trust, a contractor like PTG Enterprises!

Give me the opportunity to impress you. I can be your one stop ‘Pavement Guy,’ for any pavement project regardless of size, scope, or weather conditions.

Cold Weather Concrete Tips

  1. Have the proper equipment and manpower needed to get the job done right.
  2. Plan for bad weather and ensure the working environment and concrete maintains proper temperatures.
  3. Low slump concrete can be a great alternative for cold weather flatwork.
  4. Consider using concrete mixes containing accelerated admixtures or Type III Hi-Early cement, which require shorter protection time from freezing.
  5. Utilize a heated mix or order 100 lbs of extra cement for each cubic yard of concrete to help develop early strength.
  6. Trust PTG Enterprises!

History of the Inner Harbor & Federal Hill: Cobblestones & Concrete Pavers

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Baltimore, Maryland’s famous Inner Harbor almost never existed. In the early 1960s, a proposed road project threatened what would become the Inner Harbor. Luckily, residents of Federal Hill joined forces with other Baltimoreans and defeated the highway project. This proved to be the right move not only for Federal Hill, but also Baltimore.

The completion of Rouse’s Inner Harbor in the early 1980s brought acclaim to Baltimore and quickened the pace of revitalization in nearby Federal Hill. Then in 1994, Federal Hill park underwent a facelift. Residents wanted a better pavement than the existing gravel. They needed a pavement that would accommodate both carriages and heavy commercial trucks.

The Solution: Concrete pavers!

Reminiscent of the cobblestones used in many of Baltimore’s streets, concrete pavers provided an aesthetically pleasing, incredibly durable, and cost effective solution for Federal Hill. Since the use of concrete pavers in the park, they have spread to several blocks of sidewalks within the neighborhood.

The pavers were placed over 1 in. (25 mm) of bedding sand on 12 in. (300 mm) of compacted aggregate base.
