How Crack Fill can Benefit Your Baltimore Business
Tuesday, August 4th, 2015After a few years under the hot Baltimore sun, your once dark and pristine asphalt surface will start to show its age, losing its color and beginning to develop fractures and cracks. Aside from looking poorly maintained and creating an uneven driving surface, this kind of damage can significantly reduce the life of your parking lot or driveway and needs to be properly addressed. To make sure you get the full value out of your asphalt installation, it is important to be able to identify the signs of damage and know how to properly address them. Thankfully, most damage to an asphalt surface, especially that which is done within a few years of its installation, can be easily repaired with crack fill.
How to Resolve Ponding Water Issues in Maryland
Friday, October 17th, 2014Tell us if the following scenario sounds familiar. You are driving through an unfamiliar part of Maryland on a gloomy, rainy day. The sky is covered in dark grey clouds, casting an ominous shadow on the world around you and forcing you to turn on your headlights just to see what’s in front of you. The rain isn’t helping much either. Despite the continued effort of your windshield wipers, visibility is an issue. To make matters worse, traffic is steady. You are moving just fine, but the cars are packed on the road like a can of sardines. Then you see it…a large puddle on the side of the road. You have no choice but to drive through it. Your brain makes numerous speculations as you approach the ponding water. Is this safe? What if I hit an unseen pothole? Or worse, what if I hydroplane?
Drivers all across Maryland are met with similar situations every time it rains: Ponding Water Issues on our roadways and parking lots. These bits of standing water are more than just a nuisance; they pose an immediate threat to drivers and their vehicles. For business owners, ponding water issues cannot only lead to asphalt deterioration and the eventual need for expensive repairs or replacement, but these issues also represent a liability concern.
“All Maryland businesses, corporations, employers and business owners have a legal obligation and responsibility to properly maintain all areas of their property. This includes parking lots, driveways and sidewalks…these accidents can ultimately lead to life altering injuries that can take significant amounts of time, energy and money…management companies, cleaning companies, outsourced security companies and other corporate entities can also be held responsible for your injuries,” warns one Baltimore, Maryland lawyer who advertises himself as a “Harford County Parking Lot Accident Attorney.”
How to Resolve Ponding Water Issues in Maryland
Ponding water issues can occur for many reasons, but the most common cause is typically an issue with the sub-base and how the roadway or parking lot was graded. These issues are best addressed through milling and paving, when a pavement contractor can reshoot the grades and install a leveling lift to correct the problem area.
As we mentioned, there are a number of likely causes for your specific ponding water issues. You will not know the extent of the issue until you have a professional asphalt contractor investigate the problem and assess the situation. What is for certain is that addressing these issues in a timely fashion can and will save you money and give you peace of mind knowing you and your customers are safe.

How to Mill & Pave a Parking Lot, Keeping Your Baltimore Business Beautiful
What is Mill & Pave?
Asphalt may seem tough and durable, but add up the effects of traffic and the elements, and you’ll see how quickly commercial asphalt can wear down. Eventually, it will need to be re-paved. This is where Mill & Pave comes in.
Asphalt milling and paving is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to repair damaged parking lots and roads. Using a “milling” machine, your asphalt contractor will remove the deteriorated layer of asphalt down to a specific depth. The newly grinded surfaced is then layered with tack before being re-paved with a fresh new coat of asphalt. The millings are then hauled offsite where they can be recycled. Did we mention that asphalt is America’s most recycled and reused material? Click Here to learn more.

A Commercial Patio boosts the Curb Appeal of your Baltimore Business
Friday, July 25th, 2014When it comes to business, image is everything, or so they say. In layman’s terms, curb appeal matters. If your business were a book, people would judge it by its cover. Sorry mom. It turns out it isn’t what’s inside that really counts. That is just the harsh reality of the Baltimore business community. Potential customers form an opinion about your business well-before ever stepping foot through the front door. So what type of impression is your business currently giving passersby?
A Commercial Patio boosts the Curb Appeal of your Baltimore Business
When it comes to boosting curb appeal, why not choose a project that not only improves aesthetics, but also functionality? Why not build a patio?
- A patio is both aesthetically appealing and functional, giving your employees and customers a nice outdoor venue in which to relax and unwind. Add a few tables and it is the perfect place for lunch!
- Because pavers come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors, there are nearly limitless design options. Hello, curb appeal!
- Patios have an expected lifespan of 30 years or more if installed correctly.

The Brick Laying Process
- Decide on a pattern. This includes choosing your pavers, which come in all types of shapes, sizes and colors. So be ready to make some tough decisions. If you are unsure what you want, PTG can work with you throughout the entire process.
- Let PTG Enterprises get to work. We will begin by taking measurements and planning out the entire process. We will also mark off utilities: water, gas, electrical.
- Time for some excavation. We will need to excavate the site, digging about 6-8 inches deep.
- Laying the framework. Next, we will lay the frame. This helps hold everything in place, preventing shifting over time.
- Gravel time! We will lay approximately 4 inches of gravel as a base.
- The sand comes next. We will cover the gravel with 2-3 inches of sand and level the entire surface.
- Brick by brick. Once the sand is level, we will begin laying the paving stones, brick by brick.
- Fill in the cracks. Now it is time to fill in the cracks with sand.
- Enjoy!

The Milling and Paving Process
Friday, August 9th, 2013You are finally done for the day. You turn off the computer, hit the light switch, lock your office door and begin to make your way to the front door. You take one step out of the door and there it is…a crack in the asphalt. Oh no! What do you do? Do you panic? Why is this happening?
First of all, take a deep breathe. Asphalt is not indestructible. In fact, asphalt surfaces begin to deteriorate as soon as they are first paved. The good news is that with regular maintenance, your parking lot will last 15-20 years. However, there will come a time when it needs to be replaced.
The Milling and Paving Process
Milling and paving is one of the most cost effective ways to repair damaged parking lots or roadways. The process begins with milling, the removal of deteriorated asphalt down to a specific depth to make room for a new asphalt surface. The milling process grinds up the existing asphalt (millings) so it can be shipped off site and easily recycled. The newly milled surface is then layered with tack to prepare it for re-paving.
Viola! You have a new parking lot!

Is it too cold to pave? FAQs answered by a Baltimore Asphalt Contractor
Friday, January 18th, 2013The installation of asphalt is the most critical phase of paving. Because of this, it is no wonder that many people ask us the same question this time of year: “Is it too cold to pave?” Well, the answer is yes…and no. Cold weather creates a slew of unique challenges for asphalt paving contractors. These include:
- Transportation: It is much more difficult to transport asphalt from the plant to the job site in cold weather. The hotter the asphalt the easier it is to work with. Conversely, the colder the asphalt gets, the trickier paving becomes.
- Laying and Compacting: It is tough to lay and compact asphalt in cold weather before it cools down.
In the winter months, it takes an organized crew and a knowledgeable asphalt contractor to deliver a high quality paving job in cold weather. Luckily, when you hire PTG Enterprises, that is exactly what you get.
We make paving look easy! But trust us when we say that it is not…
The Asphalt Paving Process
- There will be a man designated to either spray or spot apply tack coat material along any concrete gutter pan or sidewalk reveals.
- There will be ground personnel responsible for controlling the asphalt trucks, because it is incredibly important that the next truck is ready to go when the one ahead of it is finished.
- Now for the good stuff. The asphalt is dumped from the truck to the paver, with two men controlling each side. One is responsible to make sure the joint lines up with the previous paving pull, while the other is responsible for determining thickness, grade, pitch and fall.
- Accompanying the paver are usually two ground personnel called “Lute Men,” who take direction from the paving foreman, spreading or raking out high and low spots.
- Finally, there is the roller man. He is responsible for the compaction of the freshly laid asphalt. Usually this person will work the roller and also plate tampers and hand tampers in the tight areas where pavers and rollers cannot go.
