How to Routinely Maintain Your Porous Pavement

porous pavement

Because porous pavement maintenance requires something a little different than maintenance of regular pavement, we’re going to go over the general checklist for maintaining your porous pavement.

Porous pavement is a very special kind of pavement that drains water into the ground below it very strategically.  This system is delicate, and needs to be supported in every way possible.  Most support must come from the owner of the pavement, in order to make sure everything is working as it should.  Because porous pavement maintenance requires something a little different than maintenance of regular pavement, we’re going to go over the general checklist for maintaining your porous pavement.  Read on for more information.

Conduct an Inspection

As with every kind of pavement maintenance, your first step should be an inspection.  This is how you’re going to catch even the smallest infractions, to make sure that everything is going smoothly.  Some important things to search for can include piles of debris or standing water.  Porous pavement can get clogged, which is why it’s so important you frequently care for it.  Debris can easily build up and make it difficult for water to drain, causing erosion and other defects.  Conduct your inspection with the utmost care.

General Maintenance

If you notice runoff from other pavement, or other areas surrounding your pavement, be sure to direct it elsewhere.  Constant flowing water and debris can easily damage porous pavement without much effort.  You should also never store bulk items like salt and soil on porous pavement.  This will cause moisture to build up, and will inevitably damage the pavement underneath.  If there is an unnecessary build up of water and moisture, pavement vacuuming might be necessary.

Signs and Precautions

To help everyone protect your pavement collectively, you can post signage that indicates your porous pavement.  Here, you can show design loads and limitations, as well as where the porous pavement starts and ends.  This way, any utilities that drive over your pavement are well aware of the delicacy.  This will help everyone to become involved in protecting your porous pavement.
