Though there are many other driveway material options available on the market, the most common appear to be concrete and asphalt. They’re durable, and not nearly as expensive as brick pavers. They tend to always match homes, regardless of style. But which one are you going to choose? Read on to make sure you’re investing in the right driveway material.
Concrete
Right off the bat, we can say that installing concrete is more expensive. Any kind of decorative element, like decorative pavement, is going to make the price much higher. However, concrete lasts longer than asphalt. Concrete has a longevity that can last up to 30 years. It also requires much less maintenance. You don’t need to seal a concrete driveway; it lasts its entire lifetime without any kind of cosmetic maintenance. However, repairs are going to be obvious, and more work.
Asphalt
Think of asphalt as the newer, more advanced option. There are advantages in terms of repair; they’ll be less obvious, and less expensive. And, since asphalt expands and contracts with temperature changes, cracks are less common. You can drive on asphalt immediately after it is laid and sealed. Unfortunately, you do have to regularly care for asphalt by sealing it. But, the cost may be worth it.
Which is better?
As always, it depends. You need to consider your funds before you choose a material; if you’re trying to save money, you may want to invest in asphalt, even though sealing can get costly. It’s a risk to use concrete when repairs could end up costing you so much money. However, if money is not your main concern, and durability is what you’re looking for, concrete may be your best option. Something as simple as cosmetics could also heavily influence your decision.
