Concrete is a durable and strong material that is generally low-maintenance, but your concrete surfaces will need some upkeep during the winter. Snow and ice can result in significant damage to concrete, as freezing water that seeps into the surface will cause cracks and corrosion. Avoid these costly repairs in the spring by starting winter concrete maintenance now!
Concrete Sealers
It’s crucial to seal concrete now before winter arrives to protect the surfaces from staining, corrosion, or damages. Concrete sealers help to block the tiny pores in concrete to avoid water from seeping in and freezing. If you have concrete surfaces on your property, they should be sealed at least once every two years with a high-quality product. Remember to seal in the fall so your concrete is prepared before the cold weather and snow.
Clean Stains
While using a quality sealer is the first step, you also need to keep an eye on the concrete and clean up any stains immediately. Liquids will get trapped inside concrete easier during the winter, so be sure to clean up any spills of oil, grease, or other chemicals that may leave marks on the surface.
Also, be sure to complete general cleanings throughout the months to extend the life of your concrete. The fall weather often results in strong winds blowing debris, branches, and leaves to the ground, and removing these items will help to keep the concrete in good shape.

Once winter brings snow and ice, you will have to use the right tools to remove it. Metal shovels and tools can scratch and cut concrete, so it’s best to use plastic tools instead. Concrete is more vulnerable in the colder months, and it’s important to take additional care of the surfaces to ensure they avoid damages.
