Concrete and asphalt are both great for parking lots, sidewalks, driveways, and more, but the materials have many differences. Continue reading to learn what separates concrete and asphalt, and if one material makes a better pavement than the other.
How Are They Made?
Asphalt is a mixture made up of sands, grits, and stones. It is produced in two different ways: natural asphalt is obtained from nature, especially from lakes and rocks, while residual asphalt is obtained in the residue of petroleum refining. The process of making asphalt includes crushing and heating the rocks, then suddenly cooling them to create consolidated rock.
Concrete is the most-used man-made material in the world and is made up of three basic components: water, aggregate (rock, sand, or gravel) and cement. The components are mixed together to create a malleable substance which then drys to a strong finish.
How Long Do They Last?
Asphalt and concrete pavements must be maintained to ensure they last as long as possible. If you are providing proper maintenance to your pavement, asphalt will last 20-30 years, while concrete can last 40 years. Asphalt also needs resealing every three to five years to ensure it lasts those 20+ years, while concrete sealing is optional and need the occasional degreasing.
Pros and Cons
- Pros for concrete: It lasts longer, it is more durable, is better in warm climates, is available in multiple color options, and is easier to work with to get different finishes.
- Cons for concrete: It is more expensive to install, it cracks in freezing temperatures, and repairs are difficult than asphalt repairs.
- Pros for asphalt: Repairs are easy, cheaper and quicker to install, better for the environment, and the sleek black look is visually pleasing to the eye.
- Cons for asphalt: It doesn’t last as long, is less durable, softens in high heat, and needs maintenance every few years.
