Water Damage
Water can damage pavement in a myriad of ways, but cracks are perhaps the easiest to spot and the quickest to occur. When there are imperfections in the pavement, whether from installation or wear, water seeps underneath the surface and causes damage. Cracks will either form or deepen depending on the current state of your pavement. So, as you can imagine, filling cracks in order to prevent water damage is a vital practice.
How is it Done?
But how do we fill in cracks in pavement? There are several different methods. Hot rubber fill is the process of pouring hot rubber into smaller cracks, which is then sealed. There is also the option of cold rubber fill, and is sometimes the prefered method because it tends to stick to asphalt better. There is also the option of filling the crack with hot asphalt. This is usually only done for large cracks, probably over 1 inch in thickness. An asphalt mix will be poured into the crack and then compacted and sealed. This is an effective method which fills the crack and strengthens the weak parts of the pavement so more cracks don’t form. With these methods in place, it’s imperative you utilize them to fill in any cracks that appear. If you don’t further damage will occur, which will end up costing you far more in damage repair.
