Wear and tear on pavement is a natural process and can’t be avoided. You can always protect your pavement through sealing and frequent maintenance, and also by addressing defects quickly. One huge factor that causes defects is the environment. As we approach fall weather, the defects caused by the environment are going to be more apparent during the season change. And fall isn’t the only season that causes pavement damage. If you’re wondering how the environment can affect your pavement, read on.
Colder Weather
Though we are not quite at temperatures that approach freezing, these times are certainly fast approaching. The problem with freezing is that it can easily crack pavement due to the rapid change in temperature. This happens frequently during fall weather; it gets hotter during the day and incredibly cool at night. Then, winter comes–and as the ice and snow melt, the water seeps into the cracks and freezes. With even more freezing, the pavement can crack to an irreparable state.
Rainy Weather
Fall is also a time of high rainfall. As mentioned previously, rainwater can seep into the cracks of pavement and cause it to expand, or it can ruin the foundation underneath. Another issue with rain is the steepness of the pavement. Where water collects and pools, even without cracks, erosion is frequent. This causes dangerous potholes and jagged edges, which cause serious harm to tires and become a safety issue.
How to Prevent Damage
All this damage sounds pretty terrifying, but there are easy ways to prevent it. You should be sealing your pavement every few years to ensure it can withstand wear and damage. You should also be sure to address any defects, like cracks, holes or erosion, immediately. Without repairs, these defects could get worse over time.
