Concrete can seem pretty boring when you aren’t thinking about it too hard. Who cares? We walk on it, use it to fill our driveways, and it’s an ugly grey color. But concrete actually has a rich history and some incredible properties that make it one of the most important materials of our time. Let’s get into some reasons why concrete needs to be recognized–here are some awesome facts about this common material.
Fact #1: Concrete is used more than any other man-made material.
It makes sense–look outside your window right now. Is there concrete? Probably! A sidewalk, a driveway, a building–even parts of your home could be built using concrete. Your foundation, your supports, your basement floor…we could go on. In fact, there are 6 million cubic meters of concrete made every year. That is a lot of the grey stuff.
Fact #2: Concrete destroys wood.
Concrete is caustic. This means if you place it on top of wood, it will eventually eat away at the wood and deteriorate it. You won’t see concrete being used alongside wood in housing constructions. This would only spell disaster! It’s just another piece of proof showing that concrete is incredibly reliable. Speaking of which…
Fact #3: Concrete dates back thousands of years.
The use of concrete, even though it didn’t use the same recipe we use now, dates back to ancient Egyptians! They used something similar in the creation of the pyramids. And you probably know this–the Romans used it to build the Colosseum, along with a lot of their other creations. Most of them are still standing today, even through rapid water erosion and hundreds of years worth of weather.
