The History of the 4th of July

History 4th of JulyWhether you’re lining the cement sidewalks of your hometown and watching a parade of red, white, and blue, or you’re tailgating in a parking lot awaiting a fantastic display of fireworks, the 4th of July and cement go together. It may seem like an unlikely pairing, but for millions of Americans, it’s time to hit the pavement and celebrate the country they love. Most of us have delighted in tales of our great country’s inception since kindergarten, and we know why the 4th of July is so significant. When did our nation first start celebrating the 4th of July, and how did it become a national holiday. This 4th of July, PTG Enterprises is here to give you the facts and help you celebrate one of the best days of the year.

Pre-Revolution Beginnings

Before Americans won their freedom in the Revolutionary war, similar celebrations celebrating the king’s birthday were held in the colonies. These celebrations included bell ringing, bonfires, musket firing, and parades. During the summer of 1776, these celebrations were held along with a mock funeral for the king and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. The festivities took on a whole new meaning for liberated Americans. These gatherings that honored liberty and freedom continued on, marking some of the earliest Independence Day celebrations.

Becoming a Holiday

In 1870, Congress declared Independence Day an official national holiday. This came just decades after America faced Great Britain for the second time, in the war of 1812. Patriotic expression reached a high point, and Americans were excited about celebrating the birth of their nation. In 1941, it became a paid holiday for all federal employees, and the day has continued to hold great significance ever since.
