Maryland Asphalt Index

Whether you choose a concrete parking lot or an asphalt parking lot, when you choose PTG Enterprises we can ensure it will be built to last.

When it comes time for paving a new concrete or asphalt parking lot, or repaving an old one, there is a lot to consider. The debate is hot in regards to whether concrete or asphalt parking lots are better. When it comes to knowing the pros and cons of each when considering their strength, cost, longevity, and specific strengths, it can be difficult to know which is truly the better choice for your paving needs. PTG Enterprises is here to teach you more about both paving options, and help you discover which will deliver better results for your specific project.

Is A Concrete Or Asphalt Parking Lot Better For You?

When it comes to considering different types of paving and parking lots, ask yourself these three main questions to get started on choosing one. Consider the initial out of pocket cost, the time from installation to the first required rehabilitation efforts, and the cost of total reconstruction, replacement, or major corrective work at the 40-50 year mark.

Considering The Initial Costs

While cost should never be the sole determining factor in your concrete and asphalt parking lot paving decisions, it is certainly something important to consider. On average, the initial cost of concrete is roughly 35% more than that of asphalt. However, initial cost is only a part of the overall expenditure required. Studies have shown that concrete interstate pavements however, cost 13-28% less long term than asphalt ones.

The Time Between Installation and First Rehabilitation and Other Pros And Cons

Concrete is more cost effective over time because it has roughly twice the lifespan of an asphalt parking lot. When concrete is installed correctly it is expected to last between 30-40 year. Asphalt, however is expected to last from 15-18 years, depending on maintenance, quality of the installation, and other conditions. On average, concrete paving outlasts asphalt paving for about ten years between the time of initial installation and first major repairs. Asphalt is, however, much easier to work with than concrete.
