Installing a retaining wall is a great way to add value to your property and improve the health of your landscape. In fact, a recent study shows that landscape redesign projects saw a 105 percent value recovery after homes were sold. Prepare The Foundation

The first step of installing a retaining wall is to plan the layout and choose the desired material. The next step is preparing the foundation, by digging a trench about four-six inches deep, and twice the width of the block. It’s important to keep each section of the wall level, so be sure to pat down the dirt with a hand tamper to keep everything level. Next, we fill the trench with about three inches of paver base and spread with a rake, then tamp it down to create a strong foundation. Once it is level, it is time to install the blocks.

Building The Retaining Wall

PTG will start building at the end with the lowest elevation and set the first block in place and check to ensure the block is level side-to-side and front-to-back then continue installing the first row, checking after each block that they remain level. To start installation on the second row, we will have to cut a block to stagger the joints. To do this, we mark and cut it with a masonry blade, while ensuring all safety measures.

After installing a few rows, it is time to add drainage directly behind the blocks and lay down landscape fabric behind the wall, leaving enough excess to reach the top of the blocks. We then fill gravel directly behind the wall, then continue to build by adding more rows. Lastly, we apply concrete adhesive to the last two rows of blocks, then set the next row of blocks in place.

Retaining Wall Installation and Repairs From PTG

The main purpose of a retaining wall is to hold back earth. Moisture in the earth and constant pressure will eventually take its toll on your retaining wall over time. The condition of the wall will determine which repairs you need to complete. In some cases, you will need to remove the brick face, but in other cases, the entire wall needs to be removed down to its footer and re-built.

For all of your retaining wall installation and repairs, call PTG! Our professional crews rebuild retaining walls that are broken or weakened by hydrostatic pressure, normal wear, and erosion. Whether your property needs a single course wall installed to hold back landscaping or a multi-story retention wall to hold back a mountain of earth, PTG has the experience to get the job done.
