Prepare The Foundation

The first step of installing a retaining wall is to plan the layout and choose the desired material. The next step is preparing the foundation, by digging a trench about four-six inches deep, and twice the width of the block. It’s important to keep each section of the wall level, so be sure to pat down the dirt with a hand tamper to keep everything level. Next, we fill the trench with about three inches of paver base and spread with a rake, then tamp it down to create a strong foundation. Once it is level, it is time to install the blocks.

Building The Retaining Wall

PTG will start building at the end with the lowest elevation and set the first block in place and check to ensure the block is level side-to-side and front-to-back then continue installing the first row, checking after each block that they remain level. To start installation on the second row, we will have to cut a block to stagger the joints. To do this, we mark and cut it with a masonry blade, while ensuring all safety measures.

After installing a few rows, it is time to add drainage directly behind the blocks and lay down landscape fabric behind the wall, leaving enough excess to reach the top of the blocks. We then fill gravel directly behind the wall, then continue to build by adding more rows. Lastly, we apply concrete adhesive to the last two rows of blocks, then set the next row of blocks in place.

In some cases, you will need to remove the brick face, but in other cases, the entire wall needs to be removed down to its footer and re-built.
