Why Should You Fill Potholes Before Winter Weather Hits?

Some parts in Maryland experienced icy and snowy conditions last weekend.  In fact, just outside of Baltimore City, there was a vehicle accident that caused 2 deaths.  With this kind of information at hand, we need to start thinking seriously about road safety during the winter.  Plus, it’s officially winter!  There’s no more time to waste.  And one of the most notorious pavement defects that causes problems during winter is the pothole.

Potholes Will Get Bigger

Already, the edges of potholes are deteriorated and crumbling.  During a snowstorm, they fill with moisture, be it liquid or frozen.  When water freezes, it expands.  This can eat away at the edges of the pothole even more.  Then, when the water thaws, it can erode at the edges and foundation beneath the asphalt.  Snowplows are also a huge danger that only make things worse–they can dig into the potholes and make them bigger with each pass.

Fix Small Potholes First

In terms of cost, smaller potholes are more affordable to fill.  Catch them early!  As mentioned above, during the winter, they’ll only get worse.  It’s much cheaper and easier to fill your potholes now, rather than waiting for more ice and snow.  The season doesn’t give you a lot of time to act, so be sure to make pavement repairs before the winter wrath appears.

Safety Issues

Potholes are more than just annoying inconveniences.  They can pop tires, which may cause accidents.  Some people may swerve or brake hard to avoid them, which can also cause accidents.  The roadway is much safer when potholes and imperfections are repaired.
