There are misconceptions about everything these days because of the widespread use of the internet. It’s easy for a made-up Facebook status to be considered fact, which can eventually become a nasty, untrue rumor. The asphalt industry and its products get a bad reputation because of some seriously untrue myths that are floating around. Unfortunately, most people still believe them. Let’s debunk some asphalt myths together!
Myth #1: Asphalt production harms the environment.
Because asphalt production is such a large industry, the EPA has cracked down on its environmental impact. Now, the small amount of emissions produced by asphalt production is nowhere near the level it would take in order to harm a human. Harming the environment, while certainly a concern, isn’t an issue in asphalt production. The EPA has removed asphalt production from the list of large environmental risks.
Myth #2: Asphalt only lasts for a few years.
That’s when the asphalt isn’t properly taken care of, or sealed when it needs to be. When cared for, and kept safe from common damage and the elements, asphalt can last for up to 60 years. Of course, they aren’t without defects. But if it is deemed safe to drive on, you can say that asphalt is definitely one of the more reliable materials to pave roads with.
Myth #3: Asphalt is more expensive to use.
Concrete is also a great material to use when paving, but many people confuse asphalt and its initial cost with the long-run cost of concrete. As with everything, concrete is susceptible to damage. When this happens, it is much more expensive to repair, whereas asphalt is a much simpler task. Asphalt also tends to be more durable.
