Now that fall is here, the changing temperatures and weather conditions will start to affect your pavement. While we always expected some wear and tear, a significant amount of destruction can take place if you don’t take the proper steps to protect your pavement. Here is what you need to know about the ways that weather can affect your pavement.
Cold Weather
While temperatures won’t reach the freezing point for at least a few more weeks, the chilly weather is right around the corner. Freezing temperatures can quickly crack pavement as a result of the fluctuation between frozen and thawed. Pavement problems are especially common during the fall because it is warmer during the day and very chilly at night. Once the snow is on the ground, the water will melt during the day and seep into the cracks in the pavement. Once the temperature drops below freezing, the water will freeze and expand. Over time, the pavement can become damaged an irreparable amount.
Rainy Days
The early and mid-fall periods are full of rain that can also seep into pavement cracks. The same expansion process can occur, or the rain can actually cause the ground or foundation underneath to decay. This is one of the things that can cause sinkholes. If your parking lot or pavement is on a steep surface, water will naturally gather in the lowest areas. Over time, erosion will occur, and the pavement will undergo damage. In severe cases, potholes that are major safety issues can form.
An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure
As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. By paying attention to weather changes and performing regular preventative maintenance on your pavement through inspections and seal coating, you can prevent the worst from happening. Addressing small problems, like erosion and cracks, quickly will prevent them from becoming huge problems like potholes or sinkholes.
