What to do When Your Pavement is Discolored

pavement discoloration

Pavement discoloration can ruin a beautiful paving job, and can happen easily without proper care.

While we may ideally all want perfectly even and consistent concrete, and finishing can get us very close to that goal, the reality is that this will never be one hundred percent perfect. No matter how much effort you pour into a project, there will always be even minor inconsistencies due to several factors. These include ingredient mixing, methods of application, the weather, and curing time. Here are some ways to take on discolored pavement issues.

Flush and Scrub

Before turning to harsher chemical means, see if a simple flush and scrub will do the trick. In order to use this method, you will need to flood the surface of the discolored concrete with hot water and then scrub it hard with a brush. When discolorations are mild, several applications of this method will do the trick. As the concrete breathes in and evaporates water, it will help to evenly distribute moisture and mineral build up throughout the concrete.

Acid Wash

If the natural method doesn’t get the results you want because your discolored pavement issues are severe, consider acid wash. Use a light solution of muriatic acid that is never more than 1% acid to water to start. If this does not get results, you can add more acid, but never go above 5%. If you do, you risk permanently damaging your pavement. Never leave it on flooded concrete for more than 15 minutes before scrubbing it away.

Concrete Stain

If the other two methods do not work, then try a chemical topcoat. This stains a concrete surface in a similar way to how wood can be stained. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions for application and more closely for the best results. Test a small area first. It is also a good idea to start light, as you can always go darker, but never lighter.

Tinted Sealer

This is only recommended for areas that have already been stained to help lock in the color. It will not work to hide massive discoloration on its own. These topcoats are translucent and will highlight blotches, streaks, and discolored pavement on their own.
