Damage can sometimes look worse than it is, and vice versa.  The important thing to remember is that every driveway is different.

If your driveway is looking worse for wear, you may automatically assume it’s time to replace it.  However, that’s not always the best option; sometimes, you may not even have to resurface your driveway.  Damage can sometimes look worse than it is, and vice versa.  The important thing to remember is that every driveway is different; keep track of its age, and its material, in order to determine what you need to do to bring it back to life.  Read on to discover if you need to repair, resurface, or replace your driveway.

Cracks and Holes

Repairs can be made yourself if the cracks in your driveway are less than a quarter of an inch thick.  All you need to do is find a liquid filler manufactured to fill pavement, and you’ve got yourself a DIY repair.  Holes can also be filled, but it’s important to determine whether or not they’re compromising the foundation of the driveway or not.  Remember, all of these fillings will eventually be temporary.  Regardless of how many patch jobs you do, water will seep in through the imperfections, and you’ll need a replacement.

Resurfacing

If your driveway has cosmetic issues,  but they aren’t affecting the foundation of the pavement, you might just be able to resurface it.  A professional will be able to strip off the top layer of pavement and replace it.  That way, it’ll look brand new without the hassle of needing to replace it entirely.  If you make this decision, always make sure you get a professional to do the job–DIY paving projects never end well.

Replace

The most indicative reason you’d need to replace your driveway would be if the foundation were compromised.  It’s easy for water to slip into bigger cracks and cause foundation issues.  When this happens, it can destroy the entire driveway, essentially from the inside out.  If you’re looking to replace your driveway, you’ll also need a professional.  While it may cost more initially, it’ll save you repair costs in the long run!
