Most people associate dangerous driving conditions with Winter, specifically. But did you know there are many hazards that occur during Autumn, as well? There are actually several factors that come with Autumn weather that you, as a driver, should be wary of. Last week, we discussed why frost was a problem for many drivers and how you can avoid it. This week, let’s explore the dangers Autumn can present.
Leaves
The falling leaves of Autumn are definitely very beautiful–but they’re also dangerous. Fallen leaves can create a slick road surface, and of course, trees are everywhere. It’s very easy for leaves to create a slipping hazard on the road. In some occasions, and under the right circumstances, fallen leaves can be as slippery as ice.
Fog
Fog happens a lot more frequently during Autumn. Cold mornings after a humid night can cause bad fog issues. Also, if you live in a lower altitude or you’re near water, fog can get much worse. Make sure you aren’t driving with your high beams on when driving through fog–increased light will only cause glare that can impact your ability to see. Keep a safe distance and drive slowly so you’re prepared for any surprises or sudden stops.
Deer
Deer are something to look for all year long, but especially during Autumn. This is the time when they begin to mate and migrate. Also, remember that it gets darker much earlier in the day. It’s likely that you’re driving home from work after the sun has set. Dusk is when deer are most active! Keep a close eye out for them as you drive.
