Why It’s Desperately Important That You Respect Handicap Spaces

Many drivers do not respect or understand the importance of handicap spaces, or understand that what seems like excessive space to your run of the mill driver is actually of the utmost importance to someone with a handicap.

Many drivers do not respect or understand the importance of handicap spaces, or understand that what seems like excessive space to your run of the mill driver is actually of the utmost importance to someone with a handicap. When you utilize handicap spaces or the spaces delineated with yellow paint between them, even if it just for a quick in and out, you potentially block a handicap person from being able to get in or out of their car, and make the parking lot inaccessible to them. Even if using these spaces seems convenient, it can do great harm to others, lead to inconvenience for everyone, and possibly even get you fined.

What Happens When You Illegally Use Handicap Spaces

If you have parked in such a way that it prevents a handicap customer from accessing their vehicle and leaving the store, they will have no choice but to track you down and force you to move their car. In order to do this, this person will have to find a manager, show them the problem, and then publicly announce your license plate number so you are forced to move to another spot in the parking lot. This is time consuming and inconvenient for the handicap person, and potentially embarrassing for you. If this does not occur in a small shop where you are easily found, this can be a long ordeal, or you may not be able to be found at all. You will have effectively trapped another human being by abusing handicap spaces. Does it really sound worth the convenience of parking illegally, even if it is only “just for a minute”?

Fines For Using Handicap Spaces In A Parking Lot

It is not only morally wrong, insensitive, and potentially dangerous for handicap people who are differently abled and have different requirements to abuse parking lot spaces, but you can incur a heavy fine. While fines used to be small, they now can run from roughly $100 to $300 or more depending on the local laws and regulations where the infraction occurred.
